In a significant diplomatic exchange, the United States Senior Defense Attaché for the Indian Ocean region, CDR Jeffery D. Schwamb, extended a courtesy visit to the Seychelles National Assembly’s Defence and Security Committee (DSC). The meeting, held last Wednesday, aimed at fostering stronger collaboration between the two nations in defense and security matters.
Accompanied by Vice-Chairperson François Adelaide, Committee Assistant Secretary Donatienne Chetty, and Public Relations Manager Angelique Hill, Chairperson Clifford Andre welcomed Commander Schwamb to discuss crucial matters pertaining to the DSC and its mandates.
During the discussion, Mr. Andre expressed his satisfaction in meeting with Commander Schwamb, emphasizing the pleasure of delving into essential matters related to the committee's directives. The chairperson outlined the high priority placed on enhancing capacity-building opportunities for both committee members and supporting staff.
A significant aspect of the dialogue involved a request for increased exposure to the intricacies of communication between the US military and the US Congress. This, Mr. Andre highlighted, would facilitate benchmarking and enhance the overall experience of DSC members.
In a noteworthy recommendation, Mr. Andre suggested that invitations from the US embassy for regional conferences and seminars on topics such as maritime security, drug and human trafficking, and national resource protection be directly sent to the Seychelles Legislature. The objective is to ensure higher participation and a general enhancement in the certified portfolio of the DSC.
Commander Schwamb responded affirmatively, underscoring the vital role of up-to-date knowledge for a committee with a key oversight role. He acknowledged the enduring strength of the US-Seychelles friendship and welcomed any recommendations to further fortify it.
The fruitful meeting concluded with both parties expressing their commitment to remaining in discussion and further developing the collaborative relationship between the United States and Seychelles in the realm of defense and security.
